Current president of the Palos Verdes library district board of trustees and former mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes, Brian Campbell, visited Uganda recently and met with local officials in Kampala to research a library project that he believed might be a valuable partner with the Palos Verdes library district. The US Consulate, in partnership with a local Kampala tech incubator, launched Uganda’s first mobile library project called the “Nile Explorer” in 2018. The joint collaborative project aims to promote education with a focus on reading and learning activities that build critical thinking and problem-solving skills in children. Most of these young learners live in rural areas outside of the capital, Kampala, and do not have easy access to a library, computers, or the internet. The Nile Explorer program allows students to engage in learning activities that encourage scientific exploration, improved literacy, teach STEM skills, and promote Ugandan – US cultural ties. President Campbell’s goal is to explore building greater awareness and cultural understanding within both communities by sharing excess resources, like used books, between the Palos Verdes and Ugandan library systems.
